Fukuoka - The first month

It has been one month since the day I reached Fukuoka. Living far from home, I already missed everything in Hanoi. I miss Phở, Bánh mỳ ( Vietnamese bread), Bánh bao (Vietnamese dumpling with pork and eggs) that I ate every morning. I miss my blue scooter that I used to travel to school everyday. I miss my friends who always chatted with me. And I miss my mom and dad. I thought I wouldn't miss them that much but I did actually. I always wait to talk to them on skype every weekend. Now I understand the feeling people call "homesick".

I did many things in the past one month. WJC students, including me, had the first field trip to Kirishima and Kumamoto. In Kirishima, we stayed in japanese inn, wore yukata and did onsen (hot spring) for the first time. However, my skin seemed not to be interested in the onsen. It got scratchy after that and I have seen doctor four times so far. We moved to Kumamoto the day after to visit a castle. The castle was nice. We went to the top, took photos and had fun together. Then, we went to pick pears in a local garden. The pear I picked was 1.4 kg and super sweet. The pears were 700 yen per one but we had them for free :P

The surroundings of my dorm is kind of boring (although it's peaceful) so we often go to Tenjin or Hakata at the weekend. At my first time in Tenjin, my Thai friend took me to a famous bakery. The cakes were super delicious, but kind of expensive. Japanese cakes are great in general actually. I have to say they have brought food appetite back to me.  And at the moment, I'm feeling fat :(((

I also went to Fukuoka Tower, which is the tallest beach tower in Fukuoka. It's also called Lovers Sanctuary as couples often come here for dating. There are lots of locks with couples' names and promises on them. From the top of the tower, you can see the entire view of the city. We did and it was amazing. And when we just got out the tower, we saw lots of people dancing flashmob in front of the gate. It turned out that a guy was about to propose a girl. Then we decided to become a part of that special event as flashmobbers. My friends seemed very happy and they kept saying "oh my god", "i wish someone did the same thing to me".

Fukuoka is a rich cultural city so there are many festivals all year round. One called lantern festival in early October took place in Kira Town ( kira means sparkling in english) and almost WJC students went there.  We were given lighters to lighten hundreds of lanterns in the town. At 6pm, the festival started. People lightened every candle in the lanterns and after 20 or 30 mins, Kira town became very sparkling with fanciful candles.

As I mentioned in the previous post, Vietnamese students quickly got close to Thai students. But sadly, one of them, Hoong, who came here 6 months ago, had to go back to Thailand due to some course's change in her home university. On the day before she left, we went to Fubar for her farewell party. There was a drink buffet called nomihoudai in japanese, and usually you pay a single entrance fee which is 2000yen for girls and 3000yen for the guys. But we just paid 1000 yen as it was on Friday and we were students. I drank some kinds of cocktails and a shot of tequila and danced a lot. We stayed there till over 2am and got the dorm around 3am. It was a pretty awesome night! The day after I tried to get up early to see Hoong before she went to the airport. It was so sad to see her leaving. We keep in touch with each other on facebook or talk on skype sometimes at the moment but it would be better if she were still here.

That crazy night!

Okonomiyaki with cheese and mochi (japanese sticky rice)
Today, I had a first meeting with my host family. It's a family of five people: the couple called Mr. and Mrs. Shiraishi and 3 kids, but I didn't meet the husband today as he is in Tokyo at the moment. According to Mrs. Shiraishi, Mr. Shiraishi will be home in December and I'll see him around that time. But I had a very good time with Mrs. Shiraishi and the kids. I gave the kids snacks and Mrs. Shiraishi a Vietnamese wall carpet and she appeared to like it a lot. We cooked and ate okonomiyaki together. The kids couldn't speak English but Mrs. Shiraishi could. She even wanted to speak English to me while I tried to speak Japanese as much as I could so we ended up doing both Japanese and English. It was very fun! Around 7pm, the family took me home by car. On the way back we dropped in a convenient store and Mrs.Shiraishi bought me a chocolate cake. I´ll be seeing them again on the 6th November and Mrs. Shiraishi said she would take me to the elementary school where two of her kids are studying. So excited to see them again!

A bit about my classes. Japanese class is very fun. We study very - basic - but - useful things. As people here are not good at english and they don´t even want to speak english, I try to study and speak japanese as much as I can. I make mistakes most of the time but it´s good to study from your mistakes. It´s really cool to talk to people in japanese. In the afternoon I study some subjects in english. Less interesting than japanese class but anyway so far so good!

Los primeros días en Fukuoka, Japón

Hi all,

Ở một nơi rất hiện đại nhưng “no internet”, “no wifi”.

Cực kỳ ngon và no!

Thailand - The last days

During the last 6 days, I had three more lectures on ASEAN Economics, Security and Connectivity in the morning. The lecturer of Economics class turned out the one I had met in Hanoi before. In the afternoon, I continued to attend Advocacy workshop and Discussion Group of Media Role. Both of them were very nice, but I preferred the workshop as I had chance to do many meaningful activities such as drawing pictures, acting and doing flash mob. In the final lecture of the workshop, we studied and practiced flash mob based on Gentleman song by PSY, then did it in dinner time while others were eating. It was very surprising and awesome! The below is video on doing flash mob in our advocacy workshop! Enjoy!

On the 21st, we had a culture night. Every delegation prepared and decorated their booth carefully and beautifully. Our performance which was fashion show and singing was very good. The audience seemed to like it a lot. Other delegation’s performances were interesting and great. Some performed their traditional costume and stuff. Some gave us beautiful dances and songs. After all performances, we danced and sang a lot till late. That night was so fantastic! I also took lots of photos with other delegates in that night!

Unluckily, I was sick after the culture night. Coughing, having a temperature, and being tired. I took some medicine but still felt tired. However, I couldn’t skip class so I tried to go to bed earlier than usual to help me feel better in the following days.

On the 23rd, we did a field trip to Ayutthaya, which was previous capital of Thailand. We visited some museums and temples and watched movies but I was tired due to being sick so I couldn’t pay attention to anything as well as get anything to my mind. We had lunch at a floating market and spent the rest time shopping. I bought lots of things as souvenirs for family and friends. After lunch, we moved to another temple.Feeling better, I could join people posing and discovering the place. We took photos of group here as it was our last stop in the excursion.

We spent night time going shopping in shopping malls as we were busy with lectures and workshops in daytime. Stuff here was not expensive, compared with ones in Vietnam or some countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore or Brunei so we shopped lots and lots (My roommate spent 5000 Baht/ night shopping, only for shopping). We shopped in Terminal 21, MBK, Siam Paragon and night market. We wanted to go to Platinum shopping center as people said the stuff there was cheap, but we couldn’t do that as time was limited.

In the last two days, we did presentations on workshop and discussion group. Our group presentations were interesting that made me so proud of them. I also did interview , answered questions and took photos with media. After presentations, all delegations made a circle and stood together like a family. We wrote words to one another as well. Some people including me couldn’t help crying at that time as we all knew our time was about finished. The time we had together was priceless and unforgettable. Tears couldn’t stop running on my cheeks to such an extent that a Bruneian guy asked me if I still cried in dinner time. “Nope, I stop. I had better keep my tears for tomorrow!” I answered him.

We had a farewell party in a place which was far from the hotel. We took photos (our last photos together), hugged and gave words to one another. I cried while going to say last words and hugging them. They all were loveable and interesting that I didn’t want to say goodbye. On the bus back to the hotel, I no longer cried but still felt sad.

Vietnamese delegation left for the airport at 4am so our remaining time wasn’t much. I spent my humble time writing some words for some people I was extremely interested and thankful. Some delegates of other delegations stayed with us till we got in the bus. I  was just close to some of them in the last few days. I wished we had had more time to become closer. It was very touching to see people doing the song “1,2,3,4,5 I love you” for us when we were about to leave. That made me cry!

During 10 fabulous days, some things became familiar to me: The schedule of 6am waking up, 7am having breakfast, 8.30am going to class; Sukhumvit Road leading to Terminal 21 and BTS station; Windsor Hotel; classes of workshop and discussion group; tea break; “you are my sunshine” board; especially awesome friends. My life has changed since I met them. How rich I have become after this camp: knowledge, happiness and friendship. How lucky I am to know and be friend of such great people. No words can describe my emotion at the moment as I have been suffered “AYRA fever/symptom”. My facebook has been full of AYRA photos, comments and emotions of people. The program is over but friendship never ends. We will meet in some day! Travelling in ASEAN is no longer a big deal now as we are unity and family!

ASEAN Youth Exchange Program - Thailand - Part 1

Hello world,
I have been in Thailand for 4 days. I safely arrived in BKK on 15thafter some problems and annoying things. But everything has been good so far. The hotel I have been staying is awesome with sufficient comforts, especially swimming pool and gym. My roommie is a Malaysian girl called Grace. After receiving the hotel room, we walked to Terminal 21 – a shopping mall – to have some food. The mall is big, each floor represents one country with famous images and stuff. The food and drink here are not expensive. I saw many cars and big motorbikes moving on the roads. There are also sky trains above the roads. Thailand is country of driving on the left side so it was hard for me to get familiar at the beginning.

Next day, we went to Chulalongkorn University to celebrate opening ceremony. The university was big, much much much bigger than mine in Hanoi, and very beautiful. In the afternoon, we did a campus tour to visit this university. The weather was so hot but we had to walk. Tired but it’s worth it. At least I had lots of fun here, knew more about the university and made friends with lots of people. But I failed to remember people’s names because they looked similar and their names were quite hard to remember. I thought they encountered the same with my name. It’s the reason why a boy from Brunei named me Betty. In the evening, Vietnamese team went to a night market by subway. It was the first time I had gone by subway so I was really excited although I felt tired. We also passed by a bar street where we saw some ladyboys who had long legs.

Group 1

In the third day, we did ice breaking activities including making groups, doing group cheering and so on in the morning(I had no idea about cheers so I couldn’t think about anything. Luckily, a Philippines guy created some moves for our team. But I have forgot everything after 1 day). In the afternoon, we visited Wat Pho Temple and Museum Siam. It was hot and sunny but I didn’t bring any sunglasses, hat and sun block so my skin had become darker. The Museum Siam was very nice. There were lots of activities for people to discover Thailand from the past to now. We watched movies, played games, listened to the radio and many things to understand more about Thailand and BKK. At night, we went to another night market with our staff (one of them can speak Vietnamese) and bought some T-shirts.

Today, we had our very first lecture on ASEAN Identity. I stayed up late previous night so I was a bit sleepy while listening to the lecturer. But the workshop and discussion group in the morning were nicer. I liked the workshop on Advocacy as we did many activities and raised our voices and opinions about peace making. Not only did students from other countries speak English well, but they were also intelligent and confident. I had learnt lots of things from this camp.

We also swam today after having dinner then we did rehearsal for our culture night tomorrow. I saw other delegations practicing their performance and preparing for tomorrow everywhere in the hotel. Hopefully, our performance will go well.

I don't like the food at the hotel much as the taste is strange and different from what I eat in Vietnam. But I ll try to eat street food. They are much better.
I don’t have much time here as the majority of our time is spent in class with lectures and workshops. So I can’t write more specifically. But I will try to keep writing posts.
So the first four days in BKK have gone. I have six days left. Just enjoy!
